Piriformis Syndrome is the compression, tension or spasm of the piriformis muscle. The piriformis muscle rests on top of the sciatic nerve. When the muscle is tight or spasms, it can put pressure on the sciatic nerve, causing sciatica-like pain. This can present as pain, tingling/numbness starting in the glutes and can go down to the knee. This syndrome can become painful when sitting or standing for long periods of time and when going upstairs or walking on an incline.

What is the Piriformis muscle
The piriformis muscle originates on the anterior surface of the sacrum, and inserts on the trochanter of the femur. It is responsible for external rotation of the femur during extension and adduction of the femur during hip flexion. Due to its placement, it can not be massaged or rubbed to reduce pain or discomfort. Stretching, chiropractic adjustments and acupuncture can help loosen the muscle, reduce the pressure on the sciatic nerve and minimize pain associated with both.

How to prevent Piriformis syndrome
Use proper lifting and lowering form when picking up heavy objects, bend at the knees and lift with your legs. Practice sitting and standing with good posture. Properly warm-up and cool down when exercising, and keep the body aligned throughout the whole workout.
