Muscle Spotlight: PSOAS
.
The psoas is a muscle that many people have never heard of but could be very important for those of you suffering from hip pain, hip tightness or low back pain.
.
The psoas attaches in the front of the lumbar spine (low back) to the femur (long bone of the leg), crossing the hip. It is one of the "hip flexors" meaning that its primary action is lifting the upper leg and knee toward the chest.
.
Sitting causes this muscle to rest in a shortened position. Over time, this leads to chronic shortness in the muscle which can bring with it a variety of symptoms.
.
Low back pain: Tightness, trigger points or irritation of the psoas attachment point in the lumbar spine can cause low back pain in the form of referred pain. This pain will typically occur in the low back around the level of attachment.
Hip Tightness/Pain: Shortened psoas muscles will decrease range of motion at the hip. Also, depending on activity, many people will experience pain in the front of the hip, typically over the crease at the front of the hip many people refer to as the "groin".
